Tress is, as she often is, in her workshop. However, what she is doing in her workshop is not even close to her usual activities.

Instead of her usual array of spores and sprouter's gear, she has found some more standard tools which are sitting on the table next to a rubber mat that is holding... a toaster. She secreted one from a kitchen that isn't particularly used. To the side are a couple books from the library as well as her open notebook.

She turns the toaster upside down and starts undoing some screws on the bottom of the case.

After all, the best way to figure something out is often to gain practical knowledge.

“Copper would’ve been my first suggestion. It’s one of the seven planetary metals, corresponding with Venus.” Claudius shakes his head, smirking. “Which doesn’t much matter for our purposes. It’s only useful as a vulgar mnemonic — venereal metals are passionate metals, you see, who grow quickly heated and remain that way.”

Tress grins. "Oh, that's useful. So copper at the top of the list, then, although testing more is still probably a good idea, just to be sure."

"Let's see ... we've ruled out silver, iron, and steel." He counts them off on his fingers, and assigns them in his head, moon for silver, Mars for iron, and steel -- he thinks, picturing symbols scribbled in old books -- is a derived from iron. "Gold falls under the Sun, of course. Alchemists are obsessed with it -- no small ink amount is spilled on gold and its properties and how to recreate them. But I believe ones of those properties is its ability to carry a sun-like warmth. Tin goes with Jupiter, and might well work. Jovian metals hold heat and lightning. I wouldn't use lead, that's Saturnian. Mercury is ... well, I believe I told you about the First Element when I was a child. It's its own thing, and we wouldn't want it around food, anyway."

"Gold's also expensive, though. It's not so much a consideration here, but back home, there's a logistical issue to think of. Still worth trying in the tests, of course."

"I did wonder whether that would be the case in your world, too. Perhaps by the time you've quit this place, I'll have a philosopher's stone recipe, and I can craft a supply to send with you as a farewell present." Claudius smiles at her. "But for now, just enough gold for testing will do."

"I think no matter where you go, people are going to like shiny things, and gold definitely qualifies," Tress says sensibly. "But shiny and useful is even better."

There’s a truly silly thought that passes through Claudius’s head, one that he might’ve brushed aside before. But Tress has seen him lovelorn now, so he might as well voice it. “Galahad has hair like gold, and I’ve gotten quite fond of flattering him over it. I suppose I’m as much a fool for gold as anyone else.”

Tress laughs almost despite herself. "I think that's sweet, from you to Galahad. Although I'll never quite understand what it is about hair color that makes men try to come up with silly comparisons."

“It’s because we’ll run out of words otherwise. No matter how many words a man has, or how educated he may be, he’ll never have enough in his vocabulary to flatter someone he cares for. In fact, the more educated a man is, the worse he is about it.“ Because he has to tease, he asks, “Have you gotten your share of comparisons?”

"Oh, moons." She starts to tick off on her fingers. "Wheat, honey, caramel... sunlight¹. There is nothing wrong with 'light brown'. Not everything needs to be a metaphor."

¹ Charlie, as much as she loves you, that one was a bit off the mark. At least it wasn't food, though.

Claudius laughs. "I compared Galahad's hair to sunlight on autumn grass. We men are truly unoriginal," he says with a wry smirk. "But, in the language of over-educated suitors, it means thou art much beloved. I'm sure I need not tell thee that."

"When it came from him, yes." She smiles a little, fondly. "But we had better metaphors, anyway."

"Oh? Do tell."

[sporesprouter]

"It's just... there's one that we each came up with independently. You know when you have a pair of really good gloves, and as long as you take care of them and keep using them, they just fit better and better? Like you almost completely forget you have them on?"

"I do know," Claudius says softly. Appreciatively -- he's always admired Tress's dedication to Charlie, always wanted to help her get back to him. But the metaphor helps him understand how much they mean to each other. "It's the thing that you aim for, whenever you get a pair of new gloves. Even the finest ones, perfumed ones, fresh from the tanner. You don't want to remain like new forever. You want to become comfortable in them."

She nods. "Exactly. I just... I knew Charlie was my gloves, and then when he had to leave the Rock... he told me the same thing. I wouldn't see him again for over a year, and didn't know it was him for even longer."

“It’s worth the wait, to have one’s favorite pair of gloves again.” Claudius smiles fondly. “But thou didst more than wait. Thou didst scheme thy way aboard a ship — dost thou know, that was the first thing to make me impressed with thee? Before I even knew what a clever inventress thou wert.”

"Oh. Well, you might be giving me a little more credit than I deserve with that one. I had a lot of help. My parents, basically everyone who was working on the dock that morning... I don't think I could have done it if it was just me scheming."

Claudius laughs. "Must I tell thee thou deserv'st more credit, not less, for wrapping so many others in thy scheme? Thou shouldst know how determined I am to praise thee, and how long I can spend conjuring praises. And we've a list of metals to find."

It's all she can do not to bury her face in her hands. "Okay, fine, you win. I'm clearly amazing. Let's go find some metal."

Claudius grins in victory -- and, quite frankly, he's been enjoying all his scientific adventures of late. "Let's," he agrees.

She nods. "All right then. ... Also, I think I'll take a coffee maker from the kitchen I got the toaster from while we're looking for metal."

[wickedwit]

"Oh, the praises your crew will sing for you if bring them instant coffee," teases Claudius¹. "I approve of this plan."

¹ That one Claudius has used, though he really shouldn't. He doesn't need the caffeine with his insomnia.

"Oh. Not for coffee, actually. I just thought it might be useful to figure out the method it uses to dispense water. For the spore toaster."

Claudius laughs. "One project at a time, I see.Well-thought. We'll focus on the spore toaster."
